Against the Grain: Concept

A VISUAL ART EXHIBITION SHOWCASING THE CREATIVE TALENTS WITHIN ALTERNATIVE CULTURE. FEATURING FINE ART, MUSIC, BURLESQUE PERFORMANCE, WRITING, SCULPTURE, INSTALLATION, PHOTOGRAPHY AND TATTOO ART FROM LOCAL AND NATIONALLY RENOWNED ARTISTS.

As a curator, after my previous group exhibitions (In the Kindgom of Fiction) were received so well, I had to take the opportunity to hold another artshow in York. This time, I'm hoping to showcase the creative talents and self-expression found within areas that society often considers to be underground subcultural movements; The exhibition features work by tattoo artists, alternative performers, writers and photographers as well as fine artists and illustrators who find inspiration in the macabre and the surreal. I'm hoping to dispel any preconceived notions and apprehension towards these underground movements with a relaxed, inviting atmosphere, with both the launch evening and the weekends events including refreshments (retro sweets, homemade cakes, and beer!) and an informal ambience with a casual 'drop in' music and performance schedule. The high standards of artwork on show will speak volumes in promoting the hard work and honed talent we have in even the narrowest of underground movements.

And as an artist, It is inspirational to work with these talented and creatively expressive people. We have artists crossing all genres and using vastly differing mediums in the artshow, including collaborative pieces between sculptors and tattoo artists, highlighting the skills involved in both crafts, as well as the innovation of combining these two movements. We have fine artists working with writers, and apprentice tattooists showcasing the technical ability required to transfer a work of art from transient paper sketches into lifelong permanence on an art collectors skin. Regardless of theme or category, artwork is expressive of the individual and this artshow intends to highlight the freedom in this by showing off our artists raw creative talent.

"Music shouldn't be acceptable, and art shouldn't be; Art should be aggressive and it should be intelligent and it should be interesting, and it should cause a stir of the emotions, you know, and if it doesn't, then whats the point?" Frank Carter, Relentless: The Lives of Artists.

I'm very proud to know such passionate, creative people, and i'd like to thank everyone involved, and everyone who takes the time to check out our exhibition.
